Stubbornly Refuse To Fit In

You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken. Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less traveled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.

― Mandy Hale, The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass

So often in life people demand that you “fit in”, conform, “be like everyone else,” “be normal” as if that makes you a better person, keeps you safe, and many other things.

I cover this in my book, Launchpad 2020 The Art and [Rocket Science] Of Breakthroughs and Possibilities. It is Possibility Principle #1 – Courage To Create.

That Principle states that you don’t have to live everyone else’s version of your life, you can create a life you’d love to live.

And it’s true, even though you have so many people telling you to live your life a particular way such as pick a certain profession, sport or activity, go to a specific school, hang out with a precise type or group of people and on and on and on – you can choose for you!

You are not alone in all of that most people have had and usually still have others tell them what to do and how to live their lives.

You probably respected and cared for the people who were telling you that and often believed that they must know what is best for you and what you should be doing. You may have believed that they had your best interest at heart, and they may have. All of that most likely led you to do what they said in order to try to please them.

Often doing what they told you and trying to please them may have left you feeling unhappy and unfulfilled, like you can never measure up to what they say your life should be.

Usually, there is a reason for that hollow feeling: it is because that isn’t YOUR life, it’s other people’s version of your life, not your version.

Now, just because people were telling you how to live your life, that doesn’t make them bad people or mean, They may have good intentions and had your best interest at heart. It does however mean that what they told you might not actually be something that will work for you.

So, look at those suggestions as if they were suggesting options for lunch. Now write them down and ask yourself the following questions for each one

  • Is what they are saying really going to work for you?
  • Will it make you happy?
  • Is it truly what you desire?

And whenever people are telling you how to live your life, you can simply thank them for the suggestion, either out loud or in your head, and choose something else.

You don’t have to “be like all the other kids.”

It’s OK to choose for you

You can indeed stubbornly refuse to fit in!
