National Space Day was May 3rd and I have been watching a lot of Science Fiction movies. OK, truth is I always watch a lot of Science Fiction movies.
This weekend I watched the Lost In Space movie from 1998.
Really, it has a lot of life skills that I thought I should mention.
For instance:
Number 1
No one checked at the last minute that there were no stowaways and that the robot was operational.
Always double-check!
Granted, you may not have a stowaway or even a robot, but double-checking your preparations is a good idea. I was caught by updates that my laptop, not my robot, was doing one time when I was going to teach a class. Luckily they finished in time for the class to start, but I should have checked the night before.
And stowaways, you never know when unexpected people will show up for things, and even though they may not be plotting to take over or highjack your robot, they can still create a disruption, so be prepared by locking doors or having extra materials.
Number 2
You may be god’s gift to women or men or whatever, or you may be an evil doctor plotting to take over the world, but you need to cultivate a few people skills if you want to get along with others, or wriggle yourself out of a dire situation.
And even if you have no dire situations or such things, being able to get along with others, being helpful, and being supportive are quite helpful in many life situations.
Number 3
Even if you are a great xeno-biologist or astrophysicist, you probably should branch out your skill set in case you need to retake the ship from the evil stowaway.
The situation may not be that dire, but having a broad set of useful skills can help in many tight spots or just in case you need a time-filler!
Summary
So, even if you aren’t defending yourself and others from evil stowaways who took over your robot and are trying for world or galactic domination, there are still lessons to be learned from watching others perform those tasks.
And if you ever get a robot, let me know. I think it would be cool to see it!
